Description and Objectives of the Program

The online and digital world is evolving rapidly. We are faced with massive data sets that are beyond human handling capacities.

  • One out of every 8 couples who married in the US last year met online...
  • The volume of documents produced last year exceeds the entire written record generated during the 2000 years following the invention of writing...
  • The number of Facebook users has reached 1.7 billion.
  • 6 out of 10 people watch videos on YouTube, and the YouTube viewership rate increases by 60% every year.

Having produced 130 Exabytes of data up to 2005, humanity generated 1,200 EB by 2010 and 7,900 EB by 2015. It is estimated that 40,900 Exabytes of data will be produced in 2020. A human being reads an average of 200 words per minute, which means processing approximately 72 KiloBytes of data per hour. Since human processing capacity is limited, new tools are required to process the data generated. Consequently, computers, artificial intelligence, and machine learning are inevitably advancing.
Universities are training students for professions that have not yet been discovered. The main objective of our Computer Programming program is to teach the methods and techniques required for the functional use of computer technology products needed by all public and private sector organizations, and to train qualified individuals who are eager to work, develop, and progress.

History and Current Status of the Program
Our Computer Programming program has been accepting students into the regular (daytime) education program since 2007, and into the evening education program since 2009. Although admissions are limited to a quota of 50 during the main registration period, this number can reach higher figures with additional placements.

Education Period and Diploma Type of the Program
The education period of the program is 2 years. Graduates are entitled to receive an Associate Degree.

Admission, Registration, and Graduation Requirements of the Program
Our program admits students based on the TYT score type obtained from the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) conducted by ÖSYM. Students holding a high school diploma or its equivalent who fulfill the provisions specified in the relevant legislation of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the relevant regulations of Akdeniz University are admitted to our program. To graduate from the program, students must fulfill the success conditions specified in the Akdeniz University Education-Training and Examination Regulations.

Degree Awarded to Graduates
Our students graduating from the department receive the official title of "Computer Programmer" with their diplomas. However, depending on the specialization they choose within information technologies, they can work as: Web Programmer, Cybersecurity Specialist, System Administrator, Mobile Application Developer, Robotics and Coding Instructor, Data Analyst, Graphic Design Specialist, E-Commerce Consultant, or Social Media Manager.

Career Opportunities for Graduates
Graduates of the Computer Programming Program enjoy wide employment opportunities in software firms, computer sales and technical support companies, banks, insurance companies, internet publishing companies, radio and TV corporations, as well as public institutions and organizations operating within the service sector.

Undergraduate Programs for Vertical Transfer (DGS)

The Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) is an examination that allows associate degree graduates to transfer to 4-year undergraduate programs. Computer Programming Program graduates have the opportunity to transfer to many undergraduate programs offered under different faculties via DGS. Thus, they can obtain a bachelor's degree in addition to their associate degree.

February 2020 - Robotics Coding Train-the-Trainer Education
Train-the-Trainer Education with Certificates of Participation for Teachers involving Scratch, Arduino, and Sensors.

Coding education for young age groups stands out as an effective method for developing algorithmic skills and establishing programming logic. Scratch and Arduino training was provided to teachers from different disciplines who are interested in robotics coding to use in their lessons. A program is also planned to be prepared for our students to issue them a Robotics Coding Instructor Training Certificate of Participation.
